Dear Class of ’63,

Just after arriving in Florida, I received word that our classmate Peg Nilsson Light had passed away on March 13, 2010 from a massive heart attack.  She lived with her daughter, so anyone wishing to send a card should send it to:

                               Heather Arendt

                              5865 State Road 21

                              Keystone Heights, Fl. 32656-6924

There was no obituary and no visitation. They will have a memorial mass for her in Florida sometime in the future.

I hate the thought of Peg not having a mention in the obituary section of our website, so if there are any of you that have known her over the years and have something to say about Peg’s life, please let me know.

 Bill Passauer

OCHS classes of 1958, 1963 leading efforts to raise money

Their challenging other classes to contribute to the band uniform fund.

A group of Oil City High School alumni are challenging other OCHS graduates to make donations to offset the cost of the new Oil City High School Marching Band uniforms.

The Oil City Class of 1963 has already made a $1,075 donation after one of its members, Carol Krawiec, ran with an idea from Jo Miller of the Class of 1958.

Miller said she had the idea for alumni classes to make donations after attending a Christmas concert in which the uniform prototype was on display.

Miller said she thought it would be a good idea if alumni classes did something to help offset the costs.

Krawiec, whose husband, Ted, is a member of the Class of 1958 with Miller, heard of the idea and decided her class should pursue it as well.

"I took off with it," Carol Krawiec said.

The Class of 1963 began the donation process by allowing their Web master, Bill Passauer (also of the Class of 1963), to send e-mails to fellow classmates alerting them to the cause. The e-mail contained photographs of the future band uniforms.

After seeing photos of the uniforms, many believed the new threads were a good cause because they are machine-washable, size-adjustable with snaps for the legs and arms and can be worn over a student's clothes, Carol Krawiec said.

"She's done a beautiful job," Miller said of Carol's ability to jump-start the donation process for her class and others.

The Class of 1958 used another tactic to get the word out to its members about making donations. Miller said the class, which gets together once a month at the Log Cabin Restaurant in Seneca to reminisce and have lunch, also was planning a birthday party next year for its members. In letters discussing next summer's class-wide birthday party, the reunion committee also alerted its members to the donation effort.

To date, the Class of 1958 has raised $305, which it presented last night at the Oil City School Board's monthly work session.

In addition to presenting a check, the Class of 1958 as well as the Class of 1963 issued a formal challenge to other OCHS alumni.

"We would like to initiate a challenge to all alumni of OCHS to help defray the cost of the new band uniforms," members of the classes of 1958 and 1963 said in a prepared statement that was read at Monday's work session.

Carol Krawiec said it would be a big help if every class member would donate $1.

Mary Lou Delahunty from the Class of 1958 and Carol Krawiec also plan to announce the same challenge at the upcoming Oil City homecoming football game.

"I think if one class sees that one class is doing it they'll want to do the same," Ted Krawiec said.

The cause also is near and dear to the Krawiecs' hearts as Ted was a tuba player in the marching band and Carol was a majorette. Their son was a drum major and their daughter was on the dance team.

Delahunty added that anyone can contribute to the cause.

To make a donation, people may send a check payable to Oil City Area School District in care of Susan Fisher, business manager, 825 Granview Road, Oil City.

Those who make a donation should write "band uniforms" in the memo of the check. Carol Krawiec also noted that people also should mention what year they graduated from Oil City so the alumni can track the donation effort.

"I know that times are bad but you can't make a better investment than in a child," Miller said.

Oil City band members can't wait to get their new uniforms

Bernie Kober models a sample of the new Oil City High School Marching Band uniforms.

Oil City High School band members and their director are anxiously awaiting new uniforms for the band.

Band director Dan Cartwright said the department has ordered 100 uniforms for 65 members, and they are expected to arrive within the next couple of months. Cartwright said the extras will be necessary as potential replacements and would give the students the ability to grow into the uniforms to make sure they fit properly.

The current uniforms are about 15 years old and have become worn and tattered over time.

Cartwright and Oil City Superintendant Joe Carrico have discussed getting new uniforms for about two years. They brainstormed ideas and discussed them with a design specialist.

Cartwright also received some input from band members, and the ideas were given to the designer, who then created a few sketches. A protoype was presented to Cartwright, and he liked what he saw.

The materials used in the new uniforms are a major improvement over the present uniforms, Cartwright said. The current ones are made out of polyester and wool and are only able to be dry-cleaned.

The new uniforms are able to prevent prespiration, and they have an easy-snap hemming feature. They will be navy blue to match the football team's jerseys and the football field's new turf.

The band department needs to raise about $30,000 for the uniforms, The Oil City High School classes of 1958 and 1963 have already made sizable donations, and the Women of the Moose have contributed $1,600.

Cartwright is confident the band will receive the remaining amount in the next few months. He hopes a good chunk of that will be raised during the Music in Oil Country band festival scheduled Saturday evening at the high school football field.

Music in Oil Country is being held for the first time in 19 years, and nine high school bands - Oil City, Franklin, Allegheny-Clarion Valley, Meadville, Cambridge Springs, Brockway, Freeport, Clearfield and Philipsburg/Osceola - will participate. The Clarion University band will make a featured appearance.

Money to be put toward the uniforms will be raised through admission, concessions, contests and a special air-gram program. Participants will pay a fee and be able to deliver a message over the stadium’s public address system.

The band department is also looking for donations from the community and has planned a few other fundraisers throughout the winter.

Oil City High School is also contributing some funds needed to purchase the uniforms.

I received the following email from Jeannetta Lesh that I thought she would like to share with the class:

"I've been off line for several years or more.  I was on the class website and you've done a great job with it as usual.  Sorry I wasn't able to get to the last reunion as my season here at the lake in Elephant Butte, NM doesn't end until around Thanksgiving (usually before the first freeze of the season). I have no one to take over for me at the present time who can live on the property and take care of the business if I want to take a long trip.  I usually am limited to short trips of two or three days at a time when I know customers won't be in and out.   I really enjoyed seeing all the new pictures and reading updated info.  My best wishes to all and especially to Carol for all the hard work she also puts into the website to help keep everyone informed and up to date.

Again thanks for all your hard work and I hope you are doing well and enjoying life - I know I am.

Dear Class,

I received the following note from Jane Jackson on the passing of her mother:

Bill:

Thanks for the nice note. We can not mourn Mom's passing as she was ready to go. She always told us that aging is not for the weak and she was tired of her 95 year old body but still had a 35 year old mind and sense of humor. She prepared us well and although we miss her tremendously, we have wonderful memories. The entire family spent the last 14 years within 10 miles of one another and we had a great time. What more can you ask for??

 Thanks again,

 Jane Jackson

Below is a copy of Coach Jim Enos' obituary.  Those wishing to send Jim's wife a card or note my send it to:

Anne Enos

The Villages, FL 32162-8750

The following email from Coach Enos' wife Anne was forwarded to me from John Vender:

"We're honoring Jim's wishes that there be no formal funeral. A priest gave him last rites, and after his passing, a Baptist minister led  us in an informal service as his family gathered around his bed. (I'm Baptist)  Tim, Jim's youngest son was not able to be with Jim at the time of death, but had been with him all afternoon the day before.  We're going to hold a private, family mass when Tim returns in January.  Ann"

While this link http://www.robertsfuneralhomes.com/ will take you to the The Roberts Funeral Home in Ocala, FL, there is currently no obituary listed there nor any way of leaving the coaches' family a tribute.

Obituary of - James L. Enos

James L. "Jim” Enos, 74, of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Oil City, left this Earth after a brief illness on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, at The Villages Hospital in The Villages, Fla.

Mr. Enos died as he had lived, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Enos, who was born Feb. 15, 1934, in Oil City, headed the swim program at Oil City High School from its inception in the late 1960s until he took an early retirement from teaching in 1981 and moved to Florida.

He and his wife, Kay Enos, raised their four children in Oil City and attended St. Venantius Catholic Church in Rouseville.

When the couple retired from teaching and moved to Weirsdale, Fla., it is a testament to the closeness of their family that all four children ultimately relocated nearby.

When each of the children married and started families of their own, Mr. Enos, known as "Poppa Coach” to his grandchildren, presided over countless holiday dinners and celebrations that included the entire brood.

His distinctively booming voice, honed over years of coaching the Oil City swim team, could always be heard over the crowd during these events, which have gifted his family with countless precious memories.

After owning and operating Eaton’s Beach in Weirsdale, Fla., for 15 years, Mr. Enos relocated to The Villages, where he embraced the social and sporting life.

He was a devoted and longtime volunteer for the Phillips Golf Scramble.

After Kay Enos died in 2002, he met Anne and was blessed with another happy marriage.

Mr. Enos was an enthusiastic golfer and traveler and crammed much living into the last years of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Enos; his children, Dawn Prestipino, Jeff Enos, Tim Enos and Jayne Pheil; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Enos will be missed by his family and a large circle of friends.

There will be no formal service according to Mr. Enos’ wishes.

The family suggests that those who wish to honor Mr. Enos’ memory make a donation to the charity of their choice.

The Roberts Funeral Home in Ocala, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Class of 63,

I was informed late last night that our dear friend and classmate Bill Wigren died at approximately 7:30 PM last night in the Seneca hospital from complications.  It is unfortunate that we were unable to learn about his hospitalization until it was too late.  Unfortunately, the new Seneca hospital has a policy not to publish the admission of patients into their hospital as the Titusville hospital does.

Richard and I had planned to attend the reunion this year, but it was not meant to be. I have nearly recovered physically from the motorcycle accident that took his life and injured me. I hope that your reunion is a memorable event for all of you. It is wonderful and remarkable that your class keeps in such great communication after all the years since graduation. I want to thank all of you who sent me cards and kept me in your prayers after the loss of Dick. It was a great comfort to me. I loved Dick very much and miss him so much. To me, he was just the best man. We were very happy together and enjoyed our lives in Arizona. I hope to visit Oil City in the spring and perhaps I'll meet some of you who are still there.

Carol;

I am feeling quite well.  The surgeon called me last Sunday with the pathology report and said I am cancer free.  Everything was contained in the tumor and the tissue surrounding the tumor is clean. I didn't loose any of the kidney and am healing fast.

I doubt that I'll be able to make Carol's party.  Even though I am healing fast, I still get tired and am not ready for long evenings.  I'll see you at Cross Creek though.

Thanks for checking up on me.

Hi Bill,

First want to thank you for mentioning me on the website.  Four weeks past surgery I am coming along slowly.  Still doing passive exercises, but making headway.  Go to the Dr. next week and hope he will release me to drive and get physical therapy.  The Dr. said he put me back together like Humpty Dumpty, only with a plate and 8 screws.  Just thankful that it wasn't any worse and I am definitely relaxing and enjoying what retirement is all about.

Have attached a picture of Tom and some of our classmates when they played basketball at 7th street school.  Haven't seen it on the website, so thought it might bring back some memories.

Carol Thomas Krawiec had a bottom tooth pulled.  She ended up with a very painful dry socket.  She said that as long as she remembers to take her Tylenol she feels much better.

As for me (Bill) they gave up on the most recent medication attempt to control my chest pain when I walk.  This last medicine was a chronic pain medication.  (We can't figure out the cause, so let's treat the symptom.) While I don't suffer from chronic pain, it didn't work anyway.  The pain still came on when I walked, plus the medication kept me in a daze.  As of today, I'm on another new one.  This one speeds up digestion to get the food out of my stomach faster.  The doctor said that he has never seen a case like mine before.  For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about.  I suffer from severe chest pain when I attempt to walk longer than about three blocks.  The good news is that it is definitely NOT my heart.  The question is, "What is it?"  In seven years, they haven't been able to figure it out?

I asked Carol to check on Gail Hicks to see how she is doing after her surgery.  According to Carol, Gail is doing great!

I received this update about Dixie Tingue Andres this morning from Carol:

Just another little update on Dixie Tingue Andres.  Went to the funeral home this afternoon to see Dixie and her Mom told me it actually was a massive heart attack that took her.  Friday morning when she got up, she was having trouble breathing, so her husband called 911 and her mother and they ended up in the ER.  They ran a bunch of tests and they came up negative till they ran some blood work and then they life flighted her to St. Vincent in Erie where she passed away.  She was an organ donor, so Morrison's had to  wait 24 hour's before they got her.  By that time she was all puffy and un-recognizable.  Her mom is going to be lost as she and Dixie were very close.  Dixie took her every where and did many things for her.  This is her second daughter that she has lost in 18 months.  First her husband died, then her son-in-law , her oldest daughter and now our Dixie who was well known at school for being such a good volleyball player.  Her mom has one son left and he lives in Illinois.

I received the following email from the son of Dick Krug’s companion, Dianne.  While it was addressed to me, I have received permission to pass it on to you.   At the end is Ben’s email address.  I believe it would be kind to send him and Dianne a note of condolence.

This is Benjamin Morin, Dianne's son.

I wanted to thank you for all you've done in helping inform all that knew Dick in Oil City.  He loved everyone so much there and spoke of it frequently.

Just for your own perusal, I wanted to let you know that an external examination showed no bee stings or the like.  My mom's recalling of the events had Dick slumping down on the motorcycle and then sitting up suddenly after she asked what was wrong, though she can't remember if she just said it or if it went through their intercoms.

By all accounts, it appears that the motorcycle was in cruise control at the time of the incident.  It's our belief, though a full autopsy wasn't performed, that Dick suffered some sort of sudden and perhaps fatal ailment or affliction that ultimately caused the crash.  Which we couldn't say.

We do know that he took care of my Mom first at all costs and that if it was in his power to prevent this accident, he would have.  Witness reports show him at normal or below speed limit and driving carefully.

His helmet did come off when they stuck the guard rail but it appears that head trauma was not a determining factor.

Dick's service in Kingman was very nice and we hope befitting for Dick.  We hope he'd approve.  We were able to get my mother from the hospital in Las Vegas to Kingman to be there.  We parked his 67 Chevelle, Mom's 65 Mustang and their 77 Chevy Step-side PU out front.  Musical selections included car songs by the Beach Boys, specifically "409" (you might recall that Mom and Dick traveled over 6000 miles to pick up a 409 for his uncompleted 61 Impala project) and "Shut Down" as well as George Strait's "I Cross My Heart," a song that Dick and Mom would have played had they ever married.

I wish I could be there for his wake and internment on the 17th, but I need to take care of Mom who cannot put any weight on her leg for 12 weeks.  Her elbow also suffered a small fracture.

Thanks again for everything.  Dick loved you all, and we loved him.  We all miss him terribly.  Any further communication with me can be made to ben@s-seven.net.

 Best wishes,

 Ben

Dick Krug's wake will be May 17th, at the Rockmere Boat Club at 1 PM.  It would be nice to have a lot of our classmates there that live in the area, plus any of those that live in close range.

Dick Krug did not have a heart attack, it was an actual motorcycle accident.  He ran into a swarm of bees and was trying to get his helmet off and couldn't.  Talked directly with Bob Fry this morning and he talked directly to the officer that came on the scene and when he arrived within seconds there were a lot of bees swarming around.  Diane was saved with the fact that she had he helmet on when she fell as there were three scraps on it.

On May 3, 2007 (see below) I made a note that our Walter Brockway was quite ill.  I asked Carol Thomas recently to check up on him and this was her reply.  "My last talk with his niece (Walter's) was that he was doing very well.  He even came back for his sister's birthday, so I would say he is doing much better."

I received the following e-mail from Carol:

"We have two classmates that need our prayers and would also like to hear from some of us with a card.

Larry Waitz  just got home from the Cleveland Clinic after having surgery.  He has bladder cancer, blood pressure way high, sugar way high and many other things. Had to leave hospital because of insurance, so he is at home connected to a lot of tubes.

Larry's address is: Larry Waitz

                                3690 State Route 8

                                Titusville, PA 16354

Also, Walter Brockway could also use our prayers and I'm sure enjoy hearing from some of his classmates. I was talking to his niece the other day and she said he almost died last year. Has a long road for recovery.

Walter's address is: Walter Brockway

                                    4235 East Cassia Way

                                    Phoenix, AZ 85044-4652

So, if we could all send out a card of thinking of you to the both of them, maybe we could help build up their spirits.

Carol"
